Step-by-Step Deadbolt Installation Guide
What You’ll Need
- Deadbolt or door lock installation kit
- Drill and drill bits
- Screwdriver
- Tape measure
- Level
- Hole saw (if necessary)

This installation guide is a general outline of the steps of a deadbolt installation, but the process may still be different depending on the kind of deadbolt lock model you’ve got. It’s still best to have the manufacturer’s instructions ready and use it alongside our guide.
Remove the Existing Deadbolt (If Applicable)
Before you can begin installing a new deadbolt lock, remove the existing one first. Start by removing all the screws attaching the old deadbolt lock to the door. Remove the strike plate and the rest of the lock assembly.
Then, clean out the mortise (the hole in the door where the lock mechanism fits) if you find any dirt or debris. Check if the existing hole is the right size for your new deadbolt. If not, you’ll have to make some adjustments using a drill or chisel; it depends on how big of an adjustment it is.
Once the adjustments have been made, or if the existing hole doesn’t need any changes in the first place, you can proceed to Step 3.
Step 1: Choose the Right Height for the Deadbolt Location
You’ll want to install your deadbolt lock about 6–12 inches above your doorknob. Measure carefully, and then hold the deadbolt template that comes with your kit against the door at the chosen height. Mark where the holes need to be drilled. While marking this spot, make sure it aligns well with the sturdy part of your door jamb and door frame.
Step 2: Drill Holes
Now, you need to drill a hole for the deadbolt lock assembly. You can use a hole saw to cut through the door face for the deadbolt lock, and then use a smaller bit for the hole on the door edge, which will serve as the bolt hole.
Before inserting screws into any part of the lock, drill pilot holes to make the process smoother and to prevent splintering wood.
Step 3: Chisel Out the Mortise
Depending on your deadbolt lock model, you might need to chisel out a small area on the edge of the door so that the strike plate sits flush with the door edge.
Step 4: Install the Bolt
Now, it’s time to install the lock body and the deadbolt plate. Fit the bolt into the edge hole and use the provided screws to secure it in place.
Step 5: Attach the Deadbolt Lock
Line up the outer and inner parts of the deadbolt through the holes in the door face. Connect them as directed in your installation kit and screw them together tightly. Make sure the bolt extends and retracts properly, and that the key turns easily in the lock.

- Lubricate the Lock – Every so often, a small amount of lubrication can keep the mechanism running properly and help with smooth operation.
